Different Types of Brake Pads

The brake pad, converting the kinetic energy of the car to thermal energy by friction, plays an essential role in the car's braking system. Thus, choosing a suitable pad for your car can be both time and money saving, more importantly, saving life sometimes. And now I would like to give you a brief introduction to the different types of them.

In the past, the most popular brake pad is the organic brake pad, which is made from asbestos. Asbestos is effective in absorbing and dissipating heat from friction. However, when it breaks down, a lot of brake dust will show up, which is harmful to people's health. Thus, asbestos is gradually abandoned by most of the manufacturers. Instead, the manufacturers have created the nonasbestos organic brake pad, which is made from natural materials like rubber, glass, and resins. The main advantage of this kind of pad is that it's environmental-friendly and is easier to be disposed of. Nevertheless, the disappointing fact is that since it is much softer, it wears faster, creating even more dust than the ones made from asbestos. Besides, although nonasbestos organic ones work well in normal street driving, once exposed to high temperatures or heavy load, they lose their high efficiency in stopping the car. Thus, they are only suitable for small cars that don't do much aggressive driving, with limited hard stops and the light weight of the car being the necessities as well.

A metallic brake pad is another option for your car. Made from iron, copper, steel and graphite, metallic pads give superb performance in dissipating heat generated by friction between themselves and the brake rotors. The reason why they are so popular among the vehicle users is that they are really cost-effective and durable. Nonetheless, the metallic ones are so heavy that they don't make a good choice for high performance racing. Also, since they are very hard, they can cause more wear on the brake rotors than other types of the brake pads do. Moreover, when the days are cold, it might take slightly longer than usual for the car with metallic brake pads to stop, for the metallic ones work best when they're warm.

Light and durable, ceramic brake pads might be the best of all the types of the pads. Made from ceramic fibers, filler material, bonding agents and a small amount of copper fibers, the ceramic brake pad makes itself the best partner of the sports cars. However, due to its high price, it is not as popular as the two types mentioned above.

How Car Dealerships Set Their Online Prices

Comparing different car dealerships online has become the way many people start the process of shopping for a vehicle. These are just a few of the ways these companies set their prices to make the buying experience as helpful and efficient as possible.

Pricing

Car dealerships typically base their prices on a wide range of factors, including vehicle condition, supply, demand, and the prices other dealers in the area are charging for similar makes and models. This is the case whether they're establishing prices online or on the lot. When it comes to the Internet, however, they have access to several online tools that can help them determine the best asking price on their new and used inventory.

However, they also know that consumers have access to excellent tools as well, so they need to do their homework in order to make sure their vehicles are competitively priced. Sales managers at car dealerships look not only at competitors' websites but also at industry-related sites that give consumers an idea of how much they can expect to pay for a certain vehicle. As a result, they make sure their own prices are fair - they don't set them so high that consumers are scared to come on the lot, but they also don't set them so low that customers think something is wrong. The last thing they want to do is give a consumer any reason to think, "if a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is."

Negotiating

More and more consumers are becoming very sophisticated when it comes to shopping for vehicles online. Dealers know that if there's a discrepancy between what other car dealerships are charging and their own price, they need to be prepared to explain why that is the case. Many car dealerships direct their salespeople to sit down with prospective buyers at a computer and show them exactly how they arrive at prices for their inventory. By being transparent, they build trust with consumers so that both parties can more quickly arrive at a cost they believe is fair.

A large part of the negotiating process, of course, involves the trade-in. This is another area where salespeople use the Internet to build trust by showing consumers how they arrived at a certain price. They walk shoppers through each step of the process by using online evaluation tools that are easy to understand and provide detailed information. In most cases, these tools make it a great deal easier for the salesperson and the shopper to get on the same page.

Not only are consumers savvier than ever before when it comes to shopping for vehicles on the Internet, but car dealerships are getting savvier as well. As a result, the shopping experience has become much smoother and more efficient.

Suffix Zero

Some days ago, I finally graduated (or rather matriculated) from 1st standard 0r 1000 km to 10th standard (i.e. 10000 km) and 300 more in last 7 days, quite an eventful journey this has been. My admiration of this mechanical invention called a Car only continues to grow, well done whosoever has done that.

It's a great feeling to see that some of what I dreamed about, while in the 1st class, have come true. One of them was taking it for a loooong ride (vacation); two destinations in span of two weeks, doing some 300 km in a day all by myself (so that sets the bar for me - regarding maximum distance in a day so far). This also gave me the opportunity to chart my course on hilly terrains including the slopes and curves of Mahabaleshwar - where, as a kid, I'd see Mom being afraid to be riding by road on any format of transport!

Alas those vacations are more than 15 months old, the next one on the cards ought to be even loooooooooooonger ride... > 1500 KM to/fro: likely destination - Rajkot / Kutch:) Wish me luck.

Also realised the dream of taking it to the town where I spent much of my growing up days (it's a separate story that the two ladies in my house still find the need for me to grow up, while I think I have grown old enough to seek counsel of my old family doctor who still practices in that town)

Here are some unforgettable experiences along my 10000 km journey:

- The thrill when the needle on the speedometer moved to the other side of the 140Km mark, even for a few seconds, for a few times. Speed thrills!

- Two punctures in less than a week - on the same tyre, a (potential) conspiracy that I have not been able to unravel!

- A breakdown in the middle of the road, in midst of peak traffic.

- What every car owner experiences at some time - spending a bomb on whatever accident it be; and getting a fraction of that reimbursed by the insurer.

- Parking in a place that is otherwise fit for only our good old small car - the Maruti 800; or parking at a place where it's not restricted. Am now almost as much easy with the reverse gear as with 4th and 5th gear.

And oh yes, it feels good to give a ride to some fellow friends or family, trying to return the favors (though to different people) for lifts given to me by so many of them.

Missus is now more at ease siting besides me (initially it was her courage of being besides me when I took out the car for practice rides). I share her concern of going easy at times. And Mom has decided to be eternally afraid having a ride with me.

Let's end with the wish that government completely does away with all taxes on Petrol or that India strikes black gold within it's boundaries which is then sold at rates not more than a bottle of Bisleri bottled water.

The Transmission - Diagnosis and Rebuilding Process

In motor vehicles, the transmission generally is connected to the engine crankshaft via a flywheel and/or clutch and/or fluid coupling, shifting gears to dynamically change the speed-torque ratio in order to deliver power to the wheels in an efficient manner based on the speed of the vehicle, because a high rotational speed engine's output cannot be used for low speeds and starting. Thus, once the transmission breaks down, the vehicle will be in big trouble.

There are a number of signs showing the breakdown of the transmission, just like falling out of gear while driving, grinding sound when changing gears, burning odor and leaking transmission fluid. Once you encounter such things, you may have your transmission replaced or rebuilt. A full transmission replacement is one of the most expensive procedures a mechanic can perform on a vehicle. However, the good news is that getting the transmission rebuilt can be much cheaper as long as there are no major issues to be addressed. Well, how can the transmission, the very complex engine component be rebuilt?

Well, the process of rebuilding a transmission is rather lengthy and labor-intensive in that the mechanics must disassemble the transmission to look for problems and replace the parts that are causing it not to function properly. Generally speaking, there are two steps before rebuilding a transmission. The first is changing the transmission fluid, for this is the easiest check and one of the common problems causing the transmission breakdown-The dirty transmission fluid will cause the shifting to become noticeably "stickier" and decreasing the vehicle's fuel economy as well. Next, the mechanics will check the vehicle's computer system that controls automatic shifting (for automatics) in that transmission slipping and hard shifts can actually be caused by the computer if it is not reading the RPM correctly. And all it takes is to replace a sensor.

After this and some other diagnostic tests, the mechanic should disassemble the transmission to start rebuilding. Each part is inspected, cleaned and replaced (if necessary). Parts such as seals and gaskets are replaced anyway and if there is no big problem in its main component, the transmission would be assembled and reinstalled into the car. After the test drive to ensure everything is working properly, the car will be returned to its owner.

Well, that's all for the transmission repair. Do you find it interesting? Transmission breakdown diagnosis is important to know and it is also helpful to know something about the transmission repair. Hope you enjoy it.

How To Estimate The Cost Of A Used Car

Buying a used car can be a make or break decision for most people; it's a positive one if the person gets value for the money they pay, but it's a completely negative one if they are cheated out of their money. Knowing the real cost of the car can be a difficult factor, since there are so many different factors at play when it comes to deciding upon a used car. What model is the car? What is the mileage? What is the condition? While these are obvious questions that anybody would ask before even keeping a finger on a used car, there are some other things that must be kept in mind as well. In the following few paragraphs, we discuss the factors that will help determine the cost of a used car.

How Often Has It Been Repaired?

Damage to a car can significantly bring down its value. A person would be more willing to pay a higher cost for a car that has never been damaged in an accident before, than select a car that has been knocked up several times and repaired over and over again. As is the case with any machinery, damage can significantly rattle things within the vehicle; a sharp accident could potentially alter the shape of the chassis, which can never be brought back in position. Hence, the amount of times that a car has been repaired plays a major role. Obviously, the chances of a car from last year's make being repaired greater than a car that is ten years old are very slim, which is the reason why the recent models are priced higher.

The mileage

The mileage plays an absolutely important role in determining the cost of a used car. If a car has been driver more in a short span of time, it has seen a greater amount of wear and tear. Obviously, the price will be driven down as a result. A car that has not been driven as much, however, will have a higher price. Most people by now know that the odometer can be brought down using different underhand techniques, however by using a OBDII scanner or a professional tool, one can get the actual mileage of the car.

Condition of the vehicle

Is the paint scratching off the sides? Are the car seats worn off completely? Is the engine making a lot of sound? The condition of the car, both over the hood and under the hood, plays a vital role in determining its overall cost. If the car has recently gone through a makeover, the owner will likely ask for a higher price. It is only logical. If you are looking to get an old model, however, which is not in as pristine a condition as one would hope, then the costs will obviously be lower. These are some basic points which can help determine the cost of a used car, hence making it easier for the person to decide whether they are paying the right money for it or not.

The Audi A5 Review

The Audi A5 Cabriolet is classy with a stylish exterior and it certainly makes heads turn when seen on the road. So, if looks are what you want you can't go wrong with this model.

However, the stylish looks come with a caveat and that is the driving experience which is somewhat lackluster.

With the roof up, it is relatively quiet but when the top is down it has wind and road noise and suffers from a disturbing vibration that can be felt through both the seats and the steering wheel.

The cabin easily copes with four adults and has a decent size boot which is not compromised when the roof is down.

The model is easy to drive but unless you are on the smoothest roads, the juddering is not only uncomfortable but a little worrying.

It is a pity that the acoustic roof which reduces noise is not fitted as standard because it is almost a necessity due to the amount of sound that penetrates the cabin. Leg and headroom in the rear is limited, but the interior is still well fitted with car mats, comfortable seating and Bluetooth.

When it comes to safety, the A5 Cabriolet is made well and it has roll hoops which spring out to protect the driver and passengers. Like all Audi models, reliability is not an issue and Audi lies 10th in the 2013 Driver Power customer satisfaction poll. This is an increase of five places from the previous year.

Practicality is high on the agenda with the A5 Cabriolet. The cloth roof can be put down whilst driving at speeds of up to 30 mph and it takes up very little space when folded. The model boasts 380 litres of luggage space in the boot and this will easily fit in golf clubs or two large bags. If you fold down the seats you get an increase to 750 litres which is impressive in a Cabriolet model.

Running costs for the A5 vary according to which engine is chosen. The most economical is the 2.0 litre TDI diesel which returns 60.1 mpg. Emissions for this model are low so road tax is only £90 a year. If you want speed then the 3.0 litre TFSI V6 petrol engine will go from 0 - 62 mph in 6.3 seconds with a top speed of 155 mph.

The Advantage Of Opting For Car Front Cuts

It is really costly to maintain a car or two especially when you're dealing with second-hand ones. If you're a vehicle owner, you need to be resourceful to find alternative effective solutions that will allow you have a good ride without breaking the bank.

For instance, car parts can be expensive, but their replacements do not always need to come from official dealers or retailers. You don't always have to buy brand new for the upkeep of your car. One particularly ingenious way to source car parts is by buying front cuts. This is actually something that many car shops do. In order to supply their customers with more affordable car parts, especially the ones that are difficult to find, they deal in buying Japanese half cuts.

Through these, they can offer their customers good quality engines, suspensions, drivelines, cooling systems, etc. What exactly are front cuts or half cuts? These are cars that were chopped at the halfway point of the vehicle. The front cuts of vehicles include everything that sits in the front half of the car, such as the air conditioner setup, power steering, pedal box, cooling system, steering rack and column, suspension, etc.

There are orders that specify that a car be divided into multiple cuts, but half cuts are more common. We're talking about salvage grade cars here, so the vehicles involved could possibly be slightly damaged. At times, a cut is also not suited for a particular order, and buyers could choose to get a conversion package instead. This normally consists of only the bare essentials necessary for a conversion, such as the engine, the engine harness, the ECU, the transmission, and the airflow meter.

When you purchase whole salvage grade vehicles and have them cut and dismantled you can check the engine condition before the dismantling is done. This means that the importer can offer the cut to the market with a degree of certainty of its condition. Dealing with an export company on the other side of the world is not without risk, though this risk can be avoided by using a safe trade.

This is a payment system that provides security for both the importer and exporter. Buyers are advised to only do business with a trusted safe trade so that they can ensure that their money is protected and that they won't be swindled by a crooked exporter. There are more options out there than you know of. It pays to know other ways of doing things so that you can accomplish tasks more affordably, but just as effectively. Click here to know more.

Solve Problems Loading a Boat on a Bunk Trailer

Many trailer boat owners have problems at the ramp with launch and retrieval and are looking for new ideas that may be a solution. The source of many of these problems is often the bunk boards that support the boat on the trailer. These bunk boards are either 2 x 4" or 2 x 6" lengths of wood that are wrapped with a marine carpet to prevent damage to the boat hull. They mount to the trailer cross members with either a stationary or swivel bracket mechanism.

These trailers are usually several years old and still have the original bunk carpet in place. Over time, the carpet will absorb dirt and contamination causing increased drag on the boat hull while launching or retrieving. Naturally, boat hulls with greater weight and length will have greater drag.

Also, the carpet can wear and allow the wooden bunk boards to contact the aluminum or fiberglass boat hull. This can cause damage or unsightly marks on the hull. Another problem trailer boat owners encounter is that old carpeted bunks can prevent the boat from being loaded straight (centered) on the trailer. To the trailer owner, an obvious solution is to either replace the carpet or replace the entire bunk board.

If the boards are solid, there are other remedies for this problem.

1) There are commercially available spray-on, silicone-based products designed to reduce friction. This approach can be considered a short-term fix. The bunk carpet should be scrubbed clean with detergent, rinsed and dried before applying this product.

2) A more elegant solution is a product known commercially as 'bunk slicks'. These will fit over the 2 × 4" or 2 × 6" bunk boards. These bunk covers are made of a durable plastic with a low coefficient of friction. This product is easy to install with stainless steel mounting hardware and mount from the side and in most cases require that the old carpet be removed. They also assist in centering the boat on the trailer while retrieving the boat at the ramp.

Be careful with these! Make sure the winch strap or cable is secured to the boat's bow eye or the boat could slip off the trailer while backing down the ramp.

3) The last option would be to completely remove the bunk board and replace with another product known as Roller Bunks. These mount to the same bolster/swivel bracket mechanism as the bunk boards. This item can be described as a metal channel with sets of rollers and are only available in 4 or 5 ft. lengths. They have a hull weight limitation of 1500 lbs per pair.

Essential Ways To Ensure That Your Car's Air Conditioning Performs Well All Year Round

Modern cars have all of the futuristic systems that were the stuff of science fiction only a few decades ago, and motoring is arguably safer than it has ever been. The management system monitors almost every function and reports it to the driver through the dashboard. I can see the day coming when there will be a heads up display on the windscreen. If it works for fighter pilots, it seems to be the next logical progression in cars too.

We have never enjoyed such comfort in our vehicles. The seats are ergonomically designed to minimise back fatigue on long journeys, and the in-car entertainment systems are world-class. Climate control now comes as standard in many models and is efficient and reliable if you look after it correctly.

We are going to look at car air conditioning today and offer a few tips to help you keep it running all year-round. Many people find that when the next summer rolls around, their system no longer functions. As you will see, there are steps you can take to prevent that happening to your car.

We only tend to use the air conditioning when we need it and forget about it for the rest of the time. Some people think that running it will cost a fortune in extra petrol. Well, yes, it does have an impact on the fuel consumption but it is not as bad as you might imagine. Try to get into the routine of running the system for ten or more minutes every week, especially in the winter. Lack of use is a usual reason for it to fail.

During the cold season, the windows of the car tend to mist up. The air conditioning removes moisture from the air and will speed up the de-misting process. It is an ideal time to give the system some exercise. Set it to warm air and leave it running until the glass is clear.

Every couple of years, and especially if you intend to sell a car, take it to a specialist for a full service. It is surprisingly cheap, and it will make sure everything is in tip-top condition. I advise that you re-pressurize the system every year. Most service centres will have a fixed price for the job, and it will help your unit to run at peak efficiency.

Climate control can improve the driving comfort for those who suffer from allergies and lung problems. The air is fresh and clean which helps to control their symptoms.

Air conditioning repairs are one of the few projects you cannot take on at home. Some systems contain chemicals that are toxic to humans. You should never attempt a repair because exposure to the gas can affect your health. Because of this you should contact a car air conditioning specialist.

On a long journey, especially with children in the car, it is worth its weight in gold, in my opinion. The blistering hot weather can lead to short tempers and arguments. You can always spot a family that has a functioning system because they look comfortable and happy. You can't put a price on that.

Important Guidelines for Buying a Used Car

A car is a basic requirement of every American, but it is not necessary to buy a brand new car. You can obtain a reliable used car to satisfy your needs.

Used Car - An Affordable Option for Car Buyers

A used car is a better option for car buyers because of the following reasons:

Low cost

Low loan amount

Low down payment amount

Low insurance premium
Affordable monthly payments
What Important Guidelines should be kept in Mind while buying a Used Car?

Even though used cars are less costly, they are a huge financial responsibility. So, it is important that you make a prudent decision. Here are a few important guidelines that will help you in buying a used car:

1. Take Expert Help

Whenever someone buys a used car, he/she is advised to ask a lot of questions to the dealer. But, asking questions is not enough. Request your trusted mechanic to take a look at a used car and check the following things:

The Exterior (Windshield, wipers, headlights, directional lights, tires etc.)

The Interior (Heater, radio, air conditioner, dashboard, seats, car alarm, etc.)

The Engine (Oil leaks, battery, exhaust pipe emissions, odor of any kind, etc.)

Brakes (Parking brakes, anti-lock brakes, etc.)

Others (Frame, automatic/manual transmission, steering, etc.)

You can buy a used car if your mechanic if convinced with its condition.

2. Understand the Emission Standards

An American state must follow anyone of the following:

a) The National Emission Standards provided by the United States Environmental Protection Agency

b) The California Emissions Standards by the California Air Resources Board

Find out which standards are followed by your state. Then, check the Vehicle Emissions Control Information Label, located in the engine compartment, to ensure that the car meets the required standards.

3. Choose the Right Car Loan Program

Car loans are an important part of every car buying process. If you choose the wrong car loan program, you will end up making unaffordable monthly payments. So, don't be in a hurry to choose a car loan quote.

Apply with several lenders to obtain multiple car loan quotes. Compare all the quotes after considering factors such as monthly payments, APR, pre-payment penalty fees, documentation charges, etc. Choose the loan quote that suits your financial condition.

So, this is how you can become successful in buying a used car. Remember the guidelines before starting the car buying process.

Transportation Management Systems Can Overcome These 3 Logistic Challenges For You

A transportation management system is an all-encompassing, quality-control practice that freight companies often provide. It gives solid solutions to complement an expedited delivery function for your business. You know how essential it is to have your goods reach your customers in a timely manner and in excellent condition. Comprehensive follow-through is necessary to make sure everything falls into place. Here are 3 logistic challenges that a transportation management system (TMS) can overcome for you:

Long Lead Times and Variability

Do your lead times exceed the norm for goods and services? Do you accrue disruptions on upstream or downstream activities? The length of time from the implementation of a product to its final step of delivery can be significantly reduced. It begins with you manufacturing stellar, efficient items for your clients. Subsequently, carrier companies execute the most cost effective ways to ship those items. From inbound to outbound, a TMS can assist you in supplying the demand of your clients. When unforeseen circumstances occur, they can effectively handle critical issues to keep your customers satisfied. With real time tracking, planning for route optimization can be improved.

Changes in Demand

Have you noticed a decrease in your order volume? What about a difference in quantity from repeat customers? Consumers have unpredictable spending habits. Social trends, online reviews, and the economy all collectively affect dollars and cents every day. Your company can benefit from a TMS that will alert all parties involved to a change in cost or inventory. This creates integrated business modules that can be communicated via various technological outlets. You can gain a competitive advantage and increase efficiency due to the enhanced data.

Low Margins

Are you experiencing high product returns while producing more goods? Engaging in a "checks and balances" process is the key to properly managing inventory and reducing product returns. A TMS can keep product margins high and fuel and freight costs low. When end users can view specific details of a shipment including its serial number, they gain a heightened confidence in what is coming. Their sensory perception of the experience as a whole is above par, and that elevated satisfaction can lead to an increase in future sales.

A transportation management system produces overall operating efficiency increases and lean supply-chain operations. The accounting, management, and planning of your goods are all streamlined to exhibit a cohesive process. This generates better communication, product availability, and ROI levels.

A Review of the Second Generation Chevrolet Aveo

Chevrolet has produced a second generation Aveo with the aim of competing with the Vauxhall Corsa and the Hyundai i20.

Chevrolet has included a lot of high tech equipment in the new Aveo which has an edgy motorbike style interior. The sporty rev counter and an LED speedometer makes these features very attractive in the cabin. On the outside, the body has hidden rear handles and striking head lights.

The Aveo replaces the Swift and is much more practical with more space and better standard equipment. In addition, the diesel model gives the best fuel economy for any car in this class.

The Aveo comes in two petrol engines; a 1.2 litre and a 1.4 litre. The diesel option is available with either 94 bhp or 74 bhp and is 1.3 litre. None of these engines are going to break the speed barrier but all perform reasonably well given the restrictive nature of the size.

The five speed manual transmission can be noisy especially when starting or when travelling on a motorway. Although it is easy to drive, the car does struggle to keep up with the flow of fast traffic on the motorway. This model is quite suitable around town as it is easy to park and the light steering makes it simple to navigate around narrow streets.

Chevrolet has improved the space in the new Aveo with more leg and head room which will comfortably seat four adults. There is room for a third passenger in the back but this could prove to be a step too far on long journeys. The suspension absorbs most speed bumps and pot holes but wind and road noise can be a problem especially on motorways.

You need to constantly use the gears to keep up with the flow of fast traffic making it noisier than you would want on a long journey. There is a good amount of adjustment available for the driving position and the higher spec models include front arm rests for more comfort.

Reliability is high on the priority list for many prospective buyers and with this in mind Chevrolet gives a five year/100,000 warranty as well as a years roadside assistance. The Aveo has tried and tested parts from both the GM and Vauxhall range of vehicles so no problems are expected. Safety features included are six airbags, electronic stability control and special bumpers and a bonnet which crumple to avoid causing serious injury to pedestrians.

Chevrolet has also added a special anti roll system which has contributed to this model receiving five stars in crash safety tests. The Aveo provides a good level of equipment and is good value for money.

Types of Automotive Fluids That No Vehicle Can Go Without

A vehicle can only be in good working condition if it maintains all its necessary automotive fluids that all cars and trucks require. Several systems within a car require and rely on certain fluids to keep them operating smoothly; such as the engine, brake system, power steering system, and the transmission. Regular scheduled maintenance is vital for all cars and trucks, and fluid re-fills are one of the most important parts of factory service. Continue reading to learn about the various automotive fluids your vehicle requires and the valuable purposes they serve.

Motor Oil

Motor oil is one of the basic, primary fluids that all vehicle's need to operate safely, or at all. Motor oil is intended to lubricate the moving parts inside a car engine's crankcase. Without it, an engine will quickly overheat, causing the vehicle to break down. This is because all the moving parts within a car engine creates friction, which produces heat. The lubrication reduces this friction, which in return, prevents overheating. Motor oil protects an engine's pistons, valves, and all its other moving parts. It is possible to change the oil on your own, but the procedure is much easier facilitated by a professional mechanic with the proper training, equipment, and tools. They offer this service for a very reasonable and affordable price. Have your oil changed every 6 months or 5,000 miles, more or less depending on how much you drive.

Brake Fluid

The ability to stop a vehicle is just as important as the ability to make it go. Just like motor oil, brake fluid is also one of the most important fluids for any vehicle. A car's brake system uses hydraulic pressure to make a vehicle come to a stop. When a brake pedal is pushed, the brake line system compresses the brake fluid, which then allows the hydraulic force to be transferred to the brake pads and rotors where the friction is made that stops a vehicle. If there is a leak in this system, or no brake fluid at all, a vehicle loses its capacity to stop upon request. Brake fluid must be re-filled on a regular basis. The general rule is to have your vehicle inspected for all fluid changes and replacements, as well as other factory services, every 3 to 6 months depending on how much you drive and the age of the car or truck.

Anti-Freeze

Anti-freeze, also called coolant, is extremely important for your car or truck. It is a heat-transfer liquid that prevents a motor from overheating. It does this by cycling through an engine and collecting heat as it flows; and then returns the collected heat to the radiator, which is then filtered and released through the exhaust and muffler. A car is not operational if it over-heats. Operating a car without coolant can cause irreversible damages to the engine and other parts of the vehicle, as well as, put passengers and drivers in danger. Adding anti-freeze to your engine is simple and can be done on your own. Simply locate the radiator cap, unscrew, and our in store-bought pre-mixed coolant. Be sure to have your car's radiator flushed annually by a professional mechanic.

Fuel Analysis: What Does an Octane Rating Really Mean

Every time you fill up the tank in your car or truck, you are asked to choose between three types of fuel, designated by three different numbers, each one greater than the last. While most people know that higher numbers equal more money per gallon, what they often don't know is what the difference between regular, plus, and supreme is in terms of fuel analysis. However, an explanation may leave consumers better informed the next time they find themselves at the pump.

What do the ratings mean?

The octane number is generated by a fuel analysis done to compare the gasoline to isooctane, which is pure. Isooctane gets a 100 rating and serves as the basis of comparison. You can think of the 87, 89, or 90 sort of like grades on a test.

The ratings are important because of the engine's compression ratio. This is measured by comparing the volume of the cylinder from the bottom most movement of the piston to the top most movement. The bigger the compression ratio, the greater the amount of heat generated per stroke.

The three numbers you see at the pump measure the gasoline's resistance to knock. But what is knock exactly?

Knock is something you don't want. The term refers to the sound that can be heard when the gasoline spontaneously explodes rather than burning like it's supposed to. This leads to a loss of power, and could cause engine damage.

Why do the numbers differ?

They differ because of the additives. We all know that gasoline is refined from oil. The substance that comes directly from the refinery process has an octane level of about 70. Additives like MTBE and ETBE are used to increase the rating of the fuel. Analysis is then performed with the mixture to make sure its components are pure and a rating is assigned.

MTBE is an organic compound used as an oxygenate. Its use is declining in the US because it has been found in the ground water. ETBE is also used as an oxygenate and offers many of the benefits of ethanol, but without inducing the evaporation of gas, which causes smog. ETBE also doesn't absorb moisture from the atmosphere, like ethanol does, which can get into engines.

What kind of vehicles require plus and supreme?

Motor vehicles with more horsepower need higher-octane gasoline. One way to increase the horsepower of the engine is to increase that all-important compression ratio. As you know by now, a higher compression ratio requires a gasoline with a higher number. This is what many manufacturers mean when they describe a vehicle as having a "high performance."

The ratings have nothing to do with miles per gallon, and they usually won't make your car run better or help your engine last longer. Unless you are specifically instructed to use the premium options, you really don't need to shell out the extra cash. All grades are treated to an all-important fuel analysis to ensure that they are free of contaminants and won't harm your engine.

Elderly Drivers Important Advice

Whether you consider yourself the next Lewis Hamilton or a newbie that is still learning the ropes, I am sure you will all agree that being a driver requires an incredible amount of skill. From knowing how to operate a car to understanding what the best thing is to do when faced with an onslaught of heavy traffic, driving is a great skill and once you have it; it will stay with you for years on end. As such an important part of life and for many and as a skill that makes completing everyday tasks so much easier, driving is something we all want to continue doing, even in our elder years but is it always safe?

You hear it everywhere, that the elderly generation are a risk on the road and should stick to buses but is that really fair? Understandably once older, the senses and reaction times are perhaps a little slower than they once were but that doesn't necessarily mean that they all need to stay off the road, far from it!

There has never been a cap on driving and legally no unsafe driving age but for those in retirement, although no obligations there are a few things that you perhaps should consider in order to ensure that when you do get on the road that both yourself and other drivers are as safe as possible...

Valid Licence - Once over the age of 70 you will have to apply for your licence every three years. Ensure that you keep on top of this as failing to do so could cause a number of issues.

Long Journeys - Whether taking a trip to the coast or driving to see the grandkids, when was the last time you drove a great distance? Is this something you do regularly and are used to and comfortable with or is this something you haven't done in years? Don't just take a long journey out of the blue, be sure that it is something that you can comfortably do and plan everything carefully so you know exactly what to expect and won't get lost!

Health - It is important to ensure that you are fit to drive. As the driver of the vehicle it is your responsibility to ensure that nothing will affect you whilst on the road so ask yourself; are there any conditions that might affect your driving style? (dementia is a particularly big problem that has been the cause of several road accidents)

Time It - Driving in the dark, in difficult weather conditions or in an area you know will be swamped with traffic is never easy for the best of us so try to avoid these if you can. Unless it is extremely important, leave your journey until daylight and avoid driving in icy/snowy conditions altogether.

Is Diesel Better For The Environment

For as long as there have been drivers on the road, there have been constant complaints over fuel. From diesel to petrol, consumers have debated and will no doubt continue to do so, over the cost, efficiency and environmental impact of both. It seems however that, to this day it is diesel which continues to suffer the most.

Considered the, shall we say, worse of the two; from its price, to the extent of environmental damage it is capable of causing; diesel has yet to be considered anything but bad for the environment. With advancements in technology and improvements by both fuel companies and car manufacturers to increase both the efficiency and improve the carbon footprint diesel vehicles make, should this now not be reconsidered?

Although there is no definitive answer and no way that I could possibly say that yes, diesel is the best for the environment, there are perhaps several things to consider that might make you think twice before you completely dismiss it as the wrong choice for both you and the environment...

Many years ago diesel was generally heavier and oiler but today it is far cleaner and more environmentally friendly.
Diesel engines get far better mileage than previously which leads to a significant reduction in the release of harmful emissions and potentially far less damage to the environment.
New vehicles are now fitted with devices including catalytic converters and particulate filters and operate with the use of Adblue to significantly reduce harmful emissions.
Although the cost of diesel is noticeably more than petrol, as diesel engines operate far more efficiently, they use far less fuel and in the long run become far cheaper to run.
Diesel vehicles generally emit less C02 then petrol.
Although it may depend on the car, diesel vehicles can generally retain their value far better the petrol cars, encouraging a minimal turnover.
Diesel has undergone a bad rap which is understandable, but in the past few years significant improvements in technology have been made to ensure that diesel vehicles are no longer seen as expensive, environmentally damaging vehicles.

Today, an increasing number of drivers are now moving towards diesel and rightfully so. With far better efficiency, better mileage than petrol and increasing initiatives undertaken by automotive companies to improve on reducing harmful emissions as much as possible, diesel is no longer the bad guy.

Safe Winter Driving Tips and Tricks

Winter driving may be absolutely terrifying for some people, especially when you live in an area that experiences below freezing temperatures during the winter, combined with sleet, ice, and snow. Fortunately, there are a few steps that you can take to make your winter driving as safe as possible. These helpful tips will help you stay safe during the winter and keep your car fresh.

Proper automotive lighting equipment is absolutely necessary. One of the worst things during winter driving is the visibility, especially during a snow storm. Nowadays, some of the more luxury cars come standard with HID (High Intensity Discharge) which gives the vehicle an extremely bright, white light output that improves visibility in a tremendous sense. If your car comes standard with HID headlights, make sure they are in a working fashion! Nothing is worse than a burned out bulb, especially in the dead of the night in the middle of winter. If your car doesn't come standard with HID headlights, you can get an aftermarket set or even an HID Conversion Kit. Many car owners opt to give their vehicle a HID since they are becoming increasingly popular.

Another lighting source is the daytime running light that helps visibility during the day when you have to drive in gloomy weather. Many cars have standard factory incandescent bulbs, but you can upgrade to LED daytime running lights. You have a choice between LED daytime running light bulbs and if your vehicle is popular enough, you can even find a set of direct fit LED daytime running lights. Direct fit LED daytime running lights make your car look like it rolled out of the factory looking like that, and adds to the safety as well as the style.

Make sure your car is serviced and stocked with plenty of winter supplies. If your car needs a service, don't procrastinate. You have to get it serviced as soon as possible, in case it breaks down in the middle of the winter night due to the timing belt or a spark plug. Keep winter supplies at the ready in the trunk of your car such as an extra pair of boots or an old winter coat. Have an emergency first aid kit at the ready just in case, as well as some extra tools since you never know when you might need them.

A brand new set of snow tires is also important if you do a lot of driving in the snow. Get them mounted to a nice set of steel rims to save you extra work when you have to remove them. Snow tires give you better traction control so you have better control of your vehicle in case you have to drive over ice.

Last but not least, drive slow! Some people overestimate their driving abilities, which can lead to being stranded in the middle of nowhere, or even in an accident. Winter is not the time to test your driving abilities so it's best to drive slow and be alert for anything on the road. If you need a bit of practice, you can go to an empty parking lot to try it out. Winter driving may have danger involved, but if you take the necessary precautions, you increase your safety by tenfold.

Tips To Choose The Best Car Covers

Car covers are important whether the car sits inside or outside. They are however most useful when the car sits outside since here it is exposed to a range of elements. A good cover will shield the car from pollutants such as bird feces, tree sap, dirt, sun rays and dust. While sitting inside, it will be kept free from dust. When you have invested in a good car cover, you won't have to worry about all of these elements. You must however ensure that you buy the best of covers to enjoy the service for long.

Tip 1

When buying the car covers, start by considering where the car will be sitting. This is because for an outdoor environment you might need to buy high quality and durable covers. This is considering that the harsh weather conditions can end up taking a toll on the cover. Choose heavy duty covers for outdoor use so you are assured that they can withstand the harsh conditions all through the seasons.

Tip 2

For indoor car covers, choose those that are made from cotton and polyester. They are perfect for dust protection and you can wash them once in a while without too much trouble because there are no stubborn stains to deal with. The covers are inexpensive and they are breathable to ensure that there is no condensation buildup under them.

Tip 3

If you are looking for covers which offer much more than just dust and dirt protection while indoors, you can choose those that come with heavy flannel. They are heavier compared to other cover types and they have the potential to protect your car against dings and dents. They make amazing choices for show cars too.

Tip 4

For superior outdoor protection, choose covers which are made using acrylic fibers. They are good choices especially in areas which experience intense sunlight. Even though these covers are a bit expensive compared to other types, they are long lasting and durable. They are also waterproof and fade resistant.

Tip 5

To get exactly what your car needs, consider going for custom made car covers. They will be made to your specifications so they fit your vehicle just right. You will only need to give details about the car make, model and the year to have the covers made just for it. The best thing about custom made covers is that you also have the liberty of choosing the materials to suit your indoor or outdoor needs.

Tip 6

When buying, look for double stitched covers. The double stitching adds durability and you can actually tell the quality based on the number of seams. The fewer the seams it will wear out faster. It will also be beneficial to choose covers treated to resist mildew and mold. They will remain in good condition however harsh the weather conditions are. You also don't want to be too lenient on price in that you compromise on the quality of the covers.

Pros and Cons Of Car Dealerships And Private Sellers

Choosing the right dealer is crucial when you are shopping for a new vehicle. There are plenty of car dealerships to choose from, but how do you decide which to visit? Read below to learn what you should consider when deciding where to buy your brand new ride.

Choosing Between Car Dealerships Or Private Sellers

No matter which you choose, both car dealers and private sellers should offer good prices and great customer service. In any case, you must get a vehicle history report, compare prices, work out your financing, and learn about insurance charges. It's also important that you do some research about the makes and models you are interested in and test-drive any vehicle before you buy.

Traders and private sellers both have their pros and cons. Your decision will depend on your financial circumstances and a thorough comparison of each seller's deal.

Car Dealerships: Pros and Cons

Depending on your situation, it might be more advantageous to buy from a licensed trader. Unlike private sellers, retailers offer a great variety of models. No matter what reason you are searching for a new vehicle, you have plenty of options to choose from.

Another very important pro is that you are less likely to end up with a lemon car. A lemon automobile is a vehicle that is severely defective and doesn't work. Car dealerships have to maintain a spotless reputation and thus avoid selling defective vehicles to their customers.

An additional advantage is that at a dealership, products tend to include a warranty regardless of whether the automobile is used or new. Besides the warranty, you can also contact the service department if a technical problem arises.

Speaking of which, these businesses have certified technicians inspect all the vehicles they are selling and often offer certified vehicles. The in-house finance department can also help you finance your vehicle, get preapproved, and sign up for vehicle incentives. Indeed, a good car retailer can offer you every service you need in one convenient place.

The most notable cons of buying a vehicle from an automobile trader is that there's less room for negotiation and that it's easy to get bewitched by holiday specials and incentives. In order to avoid any these pitfalls, find a place you can trust.

Private Seller: Advantages And Disadvantages

If car salesmen don't appeal to you, find private listings through websites or classified ads. You can also find private sellers through a friend or family member. Some of the advantages of buying from a private seller include lower prices, room for negotiation, and the ability to avoid sales pitches.

However, buying a vehicle from a private seller comes with its own risks. First of all, you are dealing with a stranger who will probably sell the vehicle "as is," and will not offer any warranties. In addition, you don't have many options to choose from, and you probably have to pay the total price when you finish the negotiation. Private sellers don't offer financial options or loans. On top of those disadvantages, you have to complete all the paperwork all by yourself.

THE GAS PUMP

Well, somebody is doing something about it. Pepsi saves an average of 3.3 million Dollars on gasoline costs every year. So, my congratulations go to Pepsi for saving 15% fuel, using HHO Technology on their vehicles. They installed HHO converter kits on their fleet of over 200 trucks that drive an average of 200.000 miles per year. By doing that, this fortune 500 company reduces emissions helping to keep air clean at the same time.

The good news is that you can do what Pepsi is doing. You can now install an HHO kit (extracts hydrogen from water) on your own vehicle and save between 15 and 60% cash on fuel. Depending on how well tuned your car is.

The truth is that the use of hydrogen as a fuel for engines in transportation vehicles is nothing new. Indeed, there is a way to permanently save money at the pump. The solution is very simple, economical and environmentally friendly. Just install a hydrogen converter kit on your automobile or truck. Hydrogen generators (extract hydrogen from water) have been used to power vehicles for many years already. As we all know water is the most abundant element on the Earth's surface. As a matter of fact two thirds of the earth's surface is covered by water. Thanks to this fact the global temperatures stay at a level convenient for our survival. Furthermore water has many other uses that I won't mention here due to the lack of space. Nevertheless, I will touch a little bit on one more function of water.

Since ancient times water was used as a means of transportation. First people navigated the ocean and the rivers using oar boats. Then during the eighteenth century Robert Fulton experimented with the energy produced by hot water or steam. He followed the writings of other inventors of Europe. Three names come to mind. Denis Papin is accredited with the construction of the first steam boat in the early years of the eighteen century. Then Jonathan Hulls, in 1737 patented in Great Britain a slightly different type of boat, also powered by water steam. Finally in France Comte d'Auxiron launched yet another steam boat in 1774.

Water steam was the energy that also moved vehicles by land. In 1769 a French military engineer named Nicolas Joseph Cugnot built the first steam tractor. This self-propelled vehicle served to transport artillery for the Army at a speed of 2 ½ miles per hour.

Finally water brings another contribution to the transportation industry; hydrogen. The chemical formula of water is H20 (one part hydrogen and two parts oxygen.) Apparently it is more practical to work with hydrogen than with steam because hydrogen gas is manufactured instantly when stimulated by battery direct current inside the engine compartment of the vehicle. So, Hydrogen Fuel Cars started being manufactured in 1807. That year came out the first 'Rivaz car' designed by Francois Isaac de Rivaz of Switzerland - and 1986 was the last year the hydrogen cars were produced and exhibited in the Vancouver Transportation EXPO. Musashi 7 was a small truck with a four-stroke turbo engine that runs with liquid hydrogen. Since then without apparent reason the hydrogen car was seen no more.
